Four of the five teams that gave up the fewest points during the regular season are the last four left with a shot at the Super Bowl, something that had never happened since the NFL-AFL merger nearly a half-century ago.

And three of the four toughest to gain yards against are still around, too.

Still think that all a team needs to succeed in the modern game is an elite QB? Go ahead and take a close look at Sunday’s matchups for the conference championship games.

What this quartet of teams does have in common is solid defense, it’s the other that might truly matter the most. The more league rules and officiating tend to favor offenses, showing once again that while everyone is paying so much attention to one side of the ball, the more figuring out ways to slow that down is imperative.

Minnesota gave up 15.8 points per game. Jacksonville was No. 2 at 16.8, followed by No. 4 Philadelphia’s 18.4 and No. 5 New England’s 18.5.

Take a look at the rankings in various regular-season categories related to defense, and you can’t miss the Jaguars. That helps explain how they made it this far with Bortles, whose 84.7 rating ranked 22nd among QBs with at least 100 pass attempts and whose 13 interceptions were exceeded by only six players.

Campbell tied for second in NFL with 14.5 sacks, with the Eagles (306.5) at No. 4. The Jaguars were also second in sacks and total takeaways,Authentic Bobby Wagner Jersey, while Ngakoue added 12 and led the league by forcing six fumbles. Bouye tied for third with six interceptions, while Ramsey, the Jaguars were No. 2 in yards allowed at 286.1, Gipson and Church each had four. As a unit,Authentic Paul Richardson Jersey, trailing the No. 1 Vikings (275.9), while they topped the NFL with seven defensive TDs.

Exceptional defense can carry a team far: In nine of the last 10 seasons,Womens Jon Ryan Jersey, when the Seahawks led the league in that category but lost in the divisional round, the No. 1 or No. 2 team in points allowed participated in a conference championship game. The exception was 2015, and the Bengals ranked second but lost in the wild-card round.

“Now it’s down to,Authentic Jeremy Lane Jersey, ‘May the best defense win,'” Eagles linebacker Nigel Bradham said. “We each get to showcase what we can do.”

Washington State quarterback Tyler Hilinski has died from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

"The tragic news today surrounding Tyler Hilinski is devastating to all. Tyler was a tremendous individual, including athletics' on-staff clinical psychologist and a licensed mental health counselor, great friend and teammate, and he will be deeply missed. Our hearts go out to his family and friends, the football team was brought together and informed of the tragedy. There," interim athletic director John Johnson said. "Earlier tonight, they were met by campus and department counseling and psychological services, along with WSU Athletics medical team. The university will continue to coordinate and provide ongoing counseling care for all student-athletes as long as needed."

Hilinski appeared in eight games during his sophomore season,176 yards and seven touchdowns. His most memorable outing came in the second week of the season when he led Washington State from a 21-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat Boise State 47-44 in triple overtime. Hilinski threw for 240 yards and three touchdowns coming off the bench, throwing for 1, and was carried off the field after the victory.

His only start came in the bowl game against Michigan State, although he played extensively in a loss to Arizona.

Washington State's players took to social media in reaction to Hilinski's death.

So the linebacker was left wondering Friday what the probability was. What are the chances that he could be standing in front of his locker stall talking about playing against his little brother,Womens Bobby Wagner Jersey, Vikings linebacker Eric Kendricks, Sunday for a chance to go to the Super Bowl?

"I lived in a room with this kid for 17 years, in the same scenario," Kendricks said. "We’ve pretty much lived the same lives on opposite sides of our state . Now we’re on different teams, Authentic Justin Britt Jersey, playing the same position. It’s crazy.
