The Los Angeles Rams hadn’t lost a game in more than a month before Sunday. And in the time since that last loss—a 16-10 defeat at the hands of the NFC West rival Seattle Seahawks on Oct. 8—the Rams played mostly sensational football while winning four straight games.
But on Sunday, the Rams got pummeled by the Minnesota Vikings. They looked like a team that still needed some adjustments and improvements before it could truly be considered one of the best teams in the NFC.
75 yards, capped by a 6-yard touchdown run by Todd Gurley. But after that,LA went right down the field on its first drive of the game—nine plays, the Rams struggled to move the ball against Minnesota’s high-octane defense.
Los Angeles also made a couple of key mistakes in the game, the biggest being a fumble on Minnesota’s 2-yard line by receiver Cooper Kupp. The play came late in the second quarter with the score tied at 7.
two Minnesota players ripped the ball out of his arms and then recovered it,Kupp appeared to be headed into the end zone to give the Rams a lead they might be able to take into the halftime locker room. Instead, and that was the last time the Rams got anywhere near the Vikings’ end zone.
which meant even when the Vikings weren’t scoring,The Rams “D” didn’t have a much better day. They only forced one three-and-out all day, they were making plays work enough to move the ball and find some rhythm.
a touchdown,Former Ram backup QB and now Minnesota starter Case Keenum had a fantastic day, didn’t get sacked, didn’t throw any interceptions, which was bad news for the visitors. Keenum threw for 280 yards, and most importantly, calmly led his new team to a victory.
we have seen first-hand how erratic Keenum can be when he’s rattled,Womens Todd Gurley II Jersey,And that was probably the Ram defense’s biggest problem. They never did get Keenum rattled. In LA, but the Rams never put him in that position. And that was as big a key as any as to why the Vikings dominated Sunday’s game.
Pharoh Cooper had another good day returning kicks, and he was sure-handed throughout the game with no muffs and no fumbles. But he was about the only one who did particularly well on Sunday.
mostly because of the offense’s struggles. And punter Johnny Hekker averaged just 42.3 yards on his six punts. That’s not a terrible number,Womens Jared Goff Jersey,Kicker Greg Zuerlein didn’t get many chances, but not as good as what we’re used to seeing from the three-time Rams Pro Bowler.
when the Rams essentially won by scoring a touchdown on offense and forcing Minnesota to punt on defense,Other than both clubs’ first drives of the game,Womens Tyler Higbee Jersey, LA seemed to be a step behind in the coaching booth the rest of the day.
The Rams clearly had the right plan for how to open the game. That’s why they went right down the field and scored on the very fired-up Vikes. And then, the Ram defense followed that by holding tight and forcing Minnesota to punt.
and the Rams just couldn’t keep up. There were several times— especially near the goal line—when the Rams seemed ready for some type of pass play,But the Vikings coaches made all the right adjustments after that,Womens Pharoh Cooper Jersey, but instead were surprised by a Viking offense that ran the ball right at them and right through them for touchdowns that gave the home club the lead.
Sunday was definitely a learning experience for the young Rams coaching staff. It’ll be interesting to see how they adjust as we head through the second half of the season. And it’ll be especially fun and interesting should these two teams meet again in the playoffs.
General manager John Lynch. The former Buccaneers and Broncos safety is a six-time semifinalist. He reached the finalist stage the past four years. He’s in his first season as the 49ers GM.
Running back Roger Craig. A 2010 finalist, this is Craig’s 10th time at the semifinalist stage. He was a pioneer with his dual-threat abilities as a receiver and rusher on the 49ers from 1983-90 before moving to the Raiders in 1991 and the Minnesota Vikings in 1992-93.
Wide receiver Randy Moss. He is one of six candidates who’ve advanced in their first-year of eligibility. He emerged from a one-year hiatus to close his prolific career with the 2012 49ers team that reached Super Bowl XLVII. Moss left the Vikings after seven years to play for the Raiders from 2005-06 before other tenures with the Patriots, Titans and the Vikings again.
Owens ranks second all-time in receiving yards behind Jerry Rice,Womens Rob Havenstein Jersey,Wide receiver Terrell Owens. A finalist his previous two years of eligibility, and he ranks third in receiving touchdowns behind Rice and Moss.
Wide receiver Isaac Bruce. The long-time Rams receiver finished his career with the 49ers in 2008-09. He is a four-time semifinalist, and he was a finalist this year.
Defensive tackle Richard Seymour. He finished his career with the Raiders from 2009-12 after eight seasons in New England.
the Chargers,One more 49ers connection likely part of the next Hall of Fame class is contributor finalist Bobby Beathard. He is the grandfather of 49ers quarterback C.J. Beathard and a former executive with Washington,Womens Jamon Brown Jersey, the Falcons and the Chiefs.
guard Steve Hutchinson,Other first-year eligible candidates to reach the semifinalist stage are defensive back Ronde Barber, and linebackers Ray Lewis and Brian Urlacher.
LeRoy Butler and Brian Dawkins; offensive tackles Tony Boselli and Joe Jacoby, guard Alan Faneca; guard/center Kevin Mawae; wide receivers Torry Holt and Hines Ward; running back Edgerrin James; cornerbacks Ty Law and Everson Walls; linebacker Karl Mecklenburg; defensive ends Leslie O’Neal and Simeon Rice; and,Womens Sean Mannion Jersey,Other semifinalists: safeties Steve Atwater, coaches Don Coryell and Jimmy Johnson.
but McVay called the two-week timeline an "optimistic approach." McVay added "there was a chance" Woods' shoulder injury could've required surgery and jeopardized his season, "but I think we got good,The Rams hope it's no more than that, positive news back on that."
receptions (47) and receiving yards (703),Woods leads the Rams in targets (70), and is tied with Sammy Watkins for the team lead among receivers in touchdowns (four).
"Clearly from a production standpoint the last couple of weeks, you're losing a significant player, who has compiled 16 catches for 252 yards and two touchdowns over the past two games. "But I think what he represents, week in and week out, just by the way that he goes about his business, as well. He contributes; he plays like a complete receiver -- underneath," McVay said of Woods, intermediate, down the field. That's a significant loss for us. But there are guys that we do have confidence to step up and fill that void."
The Rams will have to make up for Woods' absence "by committee,Authentic Jared Goff Jersey, but the likes of Pharoh Cooper," McVay said. Watkins and rookie slot receiver Cooper Kupp will probably draw more targets, Josh Reynolds and Mike Thomas could factor in,Authentic Tyler Higbee Jersey, as well.
Someone else who will probably be a lot more involved is Tavon Austin, the fifth-year Rams receiver who has been used mainly as a backfield decoy and had only two offensive snaps on Sunday.
McVay said. Lance Dunbar, a change-of-pace running back,Authentic Pharoh Cooper Jersey,Austin's role will now be "a combination" of being a threat out of the backfield and lining up as a traditional receiver, could theoretically replicate what Austin was doing out of the backfield. But Dunbar has been serving as Todd Gurley's backup while Malcolm Brown rehabs from an MCL injury.
Woods injured his shoulder with just over two minutes left in Sunday's game, when he caught a pass across the middle of the field and was brought down by Vikings safety Harrison Smith.
The Rams also lost two cornerbacks on Sunday, coupled with Troy Hill's hamstring injury,Authentic Rob Havenstein Jerseyy, with Kayvon Webster in concussion protocol and Nickell Robey-Coleman nursing a thigh injury. That, forced the little-used Dominique Hatfield into action, and he was subsequently burned by Vikings receiver Adam Thielen on a 65-yard touchdown.
Hill is expected back this week,Authentic Jamon Brown Jersey, but McVay isn't yet certain about Webster or Robey-Coleman.
The Rams rank second in the NFL with an average of 30.3 points per game, but they have also benefited from having all of their offensive starters healthy for each of their first 10 games.
that calls for the next man up," McVay said. "And that's what you see around the league. We have been fortunate in that manner,Authentic Sean Mannion Jersey,"When guys get injured, that we haven't had a lot of guys miss games that have been in those starting roles. But it looks like that's going to end up occurring."
