The Pittsburgh Steelers are a veteran team rolling in to a matchup with the younger Detroit Lions, and the Steelers are still a team that can get the job done in spite of their age in certain spots. erback that could still light up the Lions from a passing standpoint.
Biggest Name Missing: Potentially Stephon Tuitt. Tuitt was out last week for the Steelers, but other than that, Pittsburgh is pretty healthy on the whole, even after a tough divisional game against the Bengals.
Can They Defend? Yes. The Steelers defense is aggressive and attacking, capable of attacking the quarterback (26 sacks) as well as being the best team at shutting down the pass defensively this season (147 yards-per game). Those numbers should concern the Lions given their overall offensive struggles most of the season, and trouble protecting the quarterback. Slowing this group down is a tough job.
Headset Heads Up: The Steelers employ Mike Munchak as their offensive line coach, a guy who interviewed for the Lions job prior to Jim Caldwell getting the call eventually. Munchak has done a decent job with the Steelers up front, and it's interesting to note that the Lions were taking a closer look at him prior to bringing Caldwell on.
After rumors that Steelers wide receiver Martavis Bryant had requested a traded were reportedly squashed last week, the talented wideout’s name is back in the headlines after Pittsburgh’s win over the Cincinnati Bengals. That night, Bryant called out Steelers rookie receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster on Instagram and then “called in sick” to work Monday. Now, even if Bryant didn’t request a trade, it would appear both parties are headed to an ugly breakup.
Cutting the talented Bryant would be an extreme last resort,Womens Brian Dawkins Jersey, but his trade value plummets with each passing sub-50-yard outing. If the Steelers are going to recoup some value from the much-maligned wide receiver, here are three potential trading partners:
garnering just 180 yards. His 1.1 yards per route is 68th out of 83 qualifying receivers. Almost every wide receiver who is worse is either a slot receiver in an offense that doesn’t feature them or plays with a far worse quarterback than Dak Prescott.,The Cowboys are a perfect fit for a number of reasons. The most obvious: They’ve gotten almost no production out of No. 2 receiver Terrance Williams. He’s been targeted only 26 times on 163 routes
While the need is obvious, the fit also makes sense. The Cowboys have been more than willing to take chances on players with various off-field issues over the past few years. Bryant’s speed also would be a necessary addition to an offense that has been struggling to push the ball downfield. Williams,Womens Carson Wentz Jersey, along with Dez Bryant and Cole Beasley — the Cowboys’ top three receivers — have a grand total of two receptions on passes targeted 20-plus yards downfield. When Bryant was happy and healthy in 2015, he had eight such catches to go along with five drops.
though,The Saints seemingly have been in win-now mode for the past decade under Drew Brees. For the first time in a handful of years,T. J. Watt Vapor Untouchable Jersey, they actually are winning . . . now. Four straight to be exact, they still have room to fit in Bryant’s rookie contract. With Willie Snead sidelined, Coleman has been targeted at the fourth-lowest rate. This comes while playing the same position in the offense that Marques Colston averaged more than 100 targets a season for a decade., thanks in large part to a defense that can finally hold its own. Even though the Saints are strapped against the cap,Authentic T. J. Watt Jersey, they’ve thrust former undrafted free agent Brandon Coleman into a large role. He’s played 289 snaps — the second most of any skill position player on the team — yet he’s been an afterthought for Brees. Of the 82 receivers to have run at least 150 routes this season
Bryant’s 7.0 yards after the catch average was the second-best figure of any receiver in the NFL. The addition of another weapon to an offense that is already in the top five in points and yards would push the Saints from playoff contenders to Super Bowl contenders.,Bryant certainly has the skill set to translate to the same big-slot position that Coleman fills and could add even more playmaking ability. In 2015
The Steelers aren’t about to deal Bryant to a contender in the AFC, and with as much parity as there is in that conference through seven weeks, that only leaves a few possible trade partners. While the Browns would also make sense,Womens Alejandro Villanueva Jersey, the Steelers don’t have to worry about the move suddenly turning the Jets into a legitimate playoff contender., the Steelers would catch too much flak if Bryant were to burn them multiple times a season for it to seem plausible. From the Jets’ perspective, they simply need to add young talent anywhere they can on the roster. While the addition of Bryant would help New York’s offense
At 20, Smith-Schuster is the youngest player in the league. Yet he’s played long enough to understand the careful balance of egos involved, particularly on an offense as loaded as the Steelers (5-2),Authentic Brian Dawkins Jersey, who are in firm control of the AFC North as the season nears the midway point.
”Hopefully we do get him the ball more, we do feed him,” Smith-Schuster said. ”He’s a great athlete. I would like him to be on our team and moving forward I think he’s going to be big for us.”
when he caught 14 touchdowns over 21 games while helping the Steelers to consecutive playoff berths.,Authentic Carson Wentz Jersey,Bryant was in 2014 and 2015
Then the suspension hit in March 2016 and Bryant spent a year on his own, getting his life in order while living in Nevada. Bryant has said and done all the right things in his return, yet at this point his frustration appears to be bubbling over.
Bryant pointed out he was getting open but the ball was going elsewhere. Then the reports of a trade surfaced following a potentially season-turning road victory in Kansas City – a game in which Bryant caught two passes for 27 yards and earned praise from coach Mike Tomlin for his role as a blocker in the running game.,T. J. Watt Vapor Untouchable Jersey,When the Steelers were upset at home by Jacksonville earlier this month
a pattern that repeated throughout the game.,Womens T. J. Watt Jersey,Pittsburgh offensive coordinator Todd Haley called an end-around for Bryant on the first snap against the Bengals in what looked like a peace offering of sorts. Bryant jogged to the sideline after the play while Smith-Schuster ran on
Bryant appeared unaware the ball was on its way until it was out of reach.,Authentic T. J. Watt Jersey,When Roethlisberger did look deep for Bryant down the left sideline in the third quarter
It ultimately didn’t matter on an afternoon in which the Steelers held Cincinnati to all of 19 yards in the second half to win going away.
Yet, with Bryant’s gear hanging neatly in his locker,Authentic Alejandro Villanueva Jersey, his teammates were left trying to explain how another Monday arrived with another off-the-field dust-up.
Besides,Womens T. J. Watt Jersey, the Steelers still believe Bryant can make an impact even if he’s not catching the ball. He still draws extra attention when he runs deep, opening things for others. It may not be the path Bryant envisioned, but it is one Pittsburgh would be just fine with him following.
”There’s only one ball,” Smith-Schuster said. ”It’s hard to spread it around. At the end of the day, we all got to focus on the bigger picture.”
