the Detroit Red Wings were no exception as Toronto won its fifth game of the season,We are two weeks into the new NHL season and the Toronto Maple Leafs have been beating the living daylights out of most of the teams they've played so far. On Wednesday, 6-3.

was once again at the center of the action on Wednesday. Matthews notched an assist and his sixth goal of the season for his 10th point in seven games, Auston Matthews, and it was quite a beauty. Much like he's shown in the past,The beating heart of the Maple Leafs, Matthews' deception on his tally is something otherworldly, and he's turning almost every team he plays against inside-out as they try to cover him.

we get it. Matthews gets a ton of praise from Canadian media. So much so that fans of other Canadian teams are sick and tired of hearing about him. However,Look, it makes sense when you step back and see some of the things mainstream media is writing about Matthews.

on any given night the Maple Leafs are playing, is often the talk of the game,Is Matthews talented? Very much so. Is he underrated? Certainly not. Matthews, whether it be because of a goal or a pass or even a tiny moment that sprang a play. As far as many eyes can see, Matthews is absolutely getting the recognition he deserves.

And he will continue to do so as long as he sustains this ability to make the little things look easy and the big goals so impossible to stop. It's Auston Matthews' world we're living in, and it's time to accept that.

One area that hasn’t been a problem so far for the Red Wings has been goaltending.

in a 6-3 loss to the Maple Leafs in Toronto,Authentic Jakub Voracek jersey,That changed Wednesday, as just making a save became an issue.

then was replaced by Petr Mrazek, who allowed the first goal he faced before settling down,Authentic Mario Lemieux jersey,Jimmy Howard started but allowed three goals on four shots, as the Red Wings couldn’t overcome the off night.

” said coach Jeff Blashill, not putting the entire blame on the goaltending. “I don’t know if it was all on them. Some of it was it was one of those nights where it kind of goes in for them. We did tons of good stuff and had a lot of moments,Authentic Evgeni Malkin jersey,“There were some funny kind of goals, especially in the first (period) where we carried the play.

“But everything they seemed to throw at the net went in.”

after allowing a goal on the first shot he saw,Mrazek,Authentic Phil Kessel jersey, settled down and stopped 19 of 21 overall.

but it’s never easy to go in,” Mrazek said. “You’re cold and they’re playing fast and hard,“As a second goalie you have to be ready on the bench,Authentic Sidney Crosby jersey, and after the goals, they got momentum.

it got through three or four guys and off the post, but after that,Authentic Sidney Crosby jersey,“The first shot went in, we played real well.”

The Red Wings (4-3-0, 8 points) lost their second consecutive game in what was a supposed to be a litmus test to their quick start this season.

one of the better teams in the NHL,Toronto, is 6-1-0 (12 points).

Tomas Tatar and Jonathan Ericsson scored Red Wings goals,Henrik Zetterberg, while Nick Jensen had three assists and Dylan Larkin two.

Zach Hyman (Michigan), Auston Matthews,Nazem Kadri, Connor Brown, Morgan Rielly (power play) and William Nylander (empty net) answered for the Leafs.

Tatar and Ericsson scored 1:34 apart midway in the second period — both getting their first goals of the season — getting the Red Wings to within 4-3.

“It’s not fun when that happens but it’s part of the game,” Zetterberg said of the quick hole. “It happens sometimes. We just had to kind of put that aside and keep doing what we were doing and we played good.”

Tatar scored at 7:02 — his 100th career goal — putting back his own rebound past goalie Curtis McElhinney, who was making his first start of the season.

Ericsson cut the Toronto lead to 4-3 at 8:36 with a shot from the point that flew past McElhinney.

Originally, Ericsson’s goal was ruled no goal because of goalie interference on Justin Abdelkader.

The Red Wings were right back in the game, but Rielly’s power play goal restored the two-goal lead for Toronto at 12:57.

we’re playing good hockey at that point, I think we’re winning the game,“It’s a one-shot game, and we take a penalty and they score on a seeing-eye shot from the point,” Blashill said.

Blashill wasn’t entirely satisfied with some sloppiness, nor with an 0-for-3 performance on the power play.

“The process on the power play has been good for large parts of the season but we need to get results, adidas Jakub Voracek jersey,” Blashill said. “Same thing goes with our team. The process Monday (a loss to Tampa) was very good. In large parts the process was good (Wednesday) but we have to eliminate some mental errors.

“We have to make sure all 20 guys are going but we also have to get results. The urgency has to be real high come Friday (against Washington).”

Hainsey went plus-2 with 24:43 of ice time in Tuesday's 2-0 road win over the Capitals.

Hainsey signed with the Buds in the offseason, and so far he's proven to be a solid pickup. With three assists and a plus-3 rating,After winning the 2017 Stanley Cup with Pittsburg, adidas Mario Lemieux jersey, the 36-year-old is gelling on Toronto's top defensive pair with Morgan Rielly. Don't expect miracles from the former, but he'll add stability to your fantasy team much like he does for Toronto from the back end.

one of the Maple Leafs’ few veterans, is like a father figure for the team. If so,adidas Evgeni Malkin jersey,It’s been said before that Matt Martin, we got a very special father and son moment between Martin and second-year forward Mitch Marner before Toronto’s game against Detroit on Wednesday night.

Who has more fun inhaling smelling salts than this?

or ammonium carbonate, is a noxious inhalant that causes a rush for the user, adidas Joe Pavelski jersey,Smelling salts, increasing their alertness and energy level. It’s largely harmless in small doses, so it’s a common sight on NHL benches to see players huffing it up.

Here’s Martin hooking up Marner with a fat hit from the smelling salts back in February:

How sweet. There are a lot of ways that Martin’s leadership role might manifest itself in the Maple Leafs’ locker room, adidas Sidney Crosby jersey, but this one may be the most hilarious. Marner made it clear in September how much he likes having the 28-year-old around.

he was kind of a fatherly figure on the road and in this dressing room, he was a lot of help,“He meant a lot, adidas Sidney Crosby jersey,” Marner said. “He’s a great guy to have around constantly and talk to and I was lucky enough to have him on my team. Hopefully he’s going to be here for a long time with me.”

Marner and Martin are far from the only players in the NHL who regularly use smelling salts, but they definitely seem to have more fun with it than anyone else. It’s good to see the family in Toronto is still getting along.
