The division appears to be a three-horse race, Philadelphia looks like a top-five team this season though, and Washington has been surprisingly good defensively. Let’s take a more in-depth look at each team moving forward and see how Dallas compares to them.
Here are the picks for Week 6, with each model's percent chance of winning in parentheses. Games in bold are where the two models disagree on who has the best chance to win. Point spreads are just for reference, via Vegas Insider as of Thursday morning.
Five Redskins who are under pressure vs. the 49ers
Five Redskins who are under pressure against the 49ers
QB Kirk Cousins-He is starting to round into form and he needs to take advantage of a pass defense that is in the bottom half of the league in nearly every statistical category. Cousins could take advantage of corners Rashard Robinson and Dontae Johnson to feed Josh Doctson and Terrelle Pryor.
RB Samaje Perine-Rob Kelley didn't practice on Wednesday and Jay Gruden said that he is a "long shot" to play in Sunday. If Kelley is out, Perine will need to find more running room to improve on his average of 3.1 yards per carry and hold on to the ball (while the bobbled pitch in Kansas City was charged to Cousins it was Perine should have had it). And even Kelley goes, Perine needs to be ready for an extended relief role and the same needs will apply.
OLB Preston Smith-If the Redskins want to kick the 49ers while they are down,Womens Wesley Woodyard Jersey, who has one sack in each of Washington's four games, the best thing to do is to keep pressure on quarterback Brian Hoyer. Smith, will be the key to keeping Hoyer on the run. It would be a good time for his first multi-sack game of the year.
NT Ziggy Hood-The 49ers' most effective offensive weapon has been RB Carlos Hyde, who is nearly on a 1000-yard pace and is averaging a solid 4.5 yards per carry. It will be up to Hood to keep blockers engaged and let the linebackers bring down Hyde close to the line.
CB Bashaud Breeland-With Josh Norman out,Authentic Avery Williamson Jersey, he probably won't follow Pierre Garcon from side to side but Breeland certainly will find himself matched up against the former Redskin a lot of the time. Garcon will catch his share but keeping him locked up in key situations and keeping him for getting loose deep will be up to Breeland a lot of the time.
The Washington Redskins face the San Francisco 49ers this Sunday coming off their bye week. Despite showing significant improvement in a variety of areas on the team, the wide receiver unit hasn’t had a breakout game.
Washington starting signal-caller Kirk Cousins is on pace for his third consecutive 4,000-yard passing season with 1,004 yards,Womens Jurrell Casey Jersey, seven touchdowns, one interception and a 66.1 completion percentage. The Michigan State stand out has largely been able to keep up his passing productivity largely by spreading the ball around to several different skill players.
The Redskins have five players that have caught 10 or more passes, three of which are wide receivers. Third-year veteran Jamison Crowder leads the receiving corp with 14 receptions and former Ohio State standout Terrelle Pryor leads the unit with 186 yards.
There are some compelling statistics that highlight the status of the Burgundy and Gold’s passing attack. Tight end Vernon Davis is averaging 20 yards per catch and leads the team in that category. Second-year receiver Josh Doctson only has three receptions despite having one of the most spectacular plays of the first quarter of the season. The former 2016 first round draft pick showed his big play ability when he caught an acrobatic 52-yard touchdown reception in a week three victory over the Oakland Raiders.
Going into the team’s fifth regular season game, no member of the Redskins wide receiver has caught over 100 yards. The comparison between last years receiving unit to the 2017 edition will be front and center with Pierre Garcon coming to Fed-Ex Field with his 49ers teammates.
Last year the 10-year veteran caught 79 catches for 1,Authentic Derrick Morgan Jersey,041 yards and three touchdowns. It remains unclear which member of the Redskins cadre of pass catchers will emerge as the lead offensive weapon to fill the void left by Garcon’s departure to San Francisco. This Sunday will give an opportunity for one of Washington’s wideouts to establish themselves as the team’s top receiving option moving forward this season.
The San Francisco 49ers have positioned themselves to make a big-time upgrade at quarterback next season.
The 49ers are playing the 2017 season with the lowest payroll in the league, a full $62.8 million under the salary cap.
And they are winless almost one-third of the way through the season, which would give them a top-three pick if the draft were held today.
With big bucks and a high pick, the 49ers could find themselves with the pick of the available quarterback litter next offseason.
But with his team visiting the Washington Redskins and possible 2018 free-agent quarterback Kirk Cousins this Sunday, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan took time Wednesday to caution the media -- and in turn the team's fans -- not to get caught up focusing on one particular player as potentially being the future of the franchise.
"That's one of the reasons that we were so excited to come here, has that many draft picks ... we knew we were going to have to add some resources. What made this such an enticing spot is we had the ability to do that from a salary-cap standpoint and draft picks," Shanahan said of the club's flexibility in talent acquisition moving forward. "When you go to a team that has that much salary-cap room, so it was exciting."
While it's assumed, Authentic Jurrell Casey Jersey, there's no guarantee the 49ers will move away from current starter Brian Hoyer next season. He is coming off by far his best game as a 49er -- 353 yards and a 101.1 passer rating -- in last week's overtime loss at Indianapolis.
"He's very meticulous, he can throw the ball really well. He's always been able to do that,Authentic Wesley Woodyard Jersey," Hoyer noted. "He was always that way in college. You can see it play out in his game now. He has a good feel for what he does and the game plan. Obviously,Womens Ryan Succop Jersey, and he's been able to take advantage of his opportunities."
SERIES HISTORY: 28th regular-season meeting. 49ers lead series, 17-9-1. The 49ers have won the last four matchups, two at each site. They won the most recent meeting 17-13 at home in 2014. The last Redskins win came at home in 2005,Authentic Ryan Succop Jersey, a 52-17 thrashing. The clubs also have met four times in the postseason, with the lone Redskins win in 1984 denying what could have been the first 49ers-Raiders Super Bowl.
--Kyle Shanahan will be facing his former employer, the Washington Redskins,Authentic Brett Kern Jersey, for the first time as a head coach.
But the former Redskins offensive coordinator from 2010-13 was quick to point out Wednesday he's been there, done that when it comes to going up against his old pals.
"My first year after I left Washington, I think it was maybe a bigger deal then,Womens Brett Kern Jersey," Shanahan said of a 2014 preseason game when he was the offensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns.
"I didn't think I was going to go back there for a while. It was actually our second preseason game. So, Womens Avery Williamson Jersey,I've been back to Washington before and I played them in Atlanta (twice -- in the 2015 regular season and 2016 preseason).
"There's a bunch of guys there that we did draft that are still there. There's a bunch of guys in that building that I'm close to and consider friends. That's always neat to say hi to those guys you haven't seen in a while. But besides that ... there's absolutely nothing personal anymore."
--Head coach Kyle Shanahan was working for the Redskins when they drafted Cousins in the fourth round in 2012.
It was not by design, he claimed Wednesday.
"I remember we went into that draft knowing we wanted to take two quarterbacks," said Shanahan,Womens Derrick Morgan Jersey, who watched as the Redskins traded up to get Robert Griffin III with the No. 2 overall pick that year.
"After we made the trade, we knew who we were going to take with the second pick in the draft. Actually, our goal was we were going to take Russell Wilson in the fourth round knowing what type of offense we were going to run. But he went before that.
