As Bryce Petty shook his hand after striking it on a helmet in the second quarter against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, Christian Hackenberg, his backup, started throwing some passes on the sideline to warm up.
a second-round draft pick,Womens Aldrick Rosas Jersey,Hackenberg, is nearing the end of his second season and still has not taken a snap in an NFL game.
"No," Bowles said of Hackenberg. "Bryce is the backup quarterback. He won it in the summer. And you put the backup in,Womens Olivier Vernon Jersey, he’s not bad, you don’t put a three over a two. Christian’s not that bad. And Bryce had not a decent ball game. But it’s only his second start. I’m not going to sit here and condemn the guy because he didn’t play well in week 2 of starting this year after not playing all year. And I’m not just going to jump a guy in that hasn’t played all year and just put him up there either."
But to this point, the Jets have not given Hackenberg a chance to show what he could do in a game. And Petty did not do much on Sunday to show that he is the answer for the Jets' future.
But Hackenberg is trying not to dwell on the fact that he's yet to take his first pro snap.
" Hackenberg said. "I think that’s a really negative way to look at it. I’ve taken every mental reps I can. I’ve taken a lot of physical reps throughout the years as well. I’m just trying to build a good base and understanding of what I need to do. Again,"You can’t look at it that way,Womens Damon Harrison Jersey, I try not to look at it that way. I think it’s a waste of energy and you just need to continue to focus and do what you need to do every day to be as prepared as you can for when that opportunity does come."
Hackenberg said his job is to continue to develop as a quarterback, knowing that he's one play away from getting in a game.
Whether that ever happens remains to be seen.
" Bowles said. "He’s learned two new systems,"There are guys in front of him,Womens Janoris Jenkins Jersey, so he wasn’t ready to play. He got a lot of time in the preseason and made progress during the year. His time will come when it comes."
at least doubling any win totals we projected for them this season,While we’ve admired the poise and passion with which the New York Jets have played this year, they still have an epic void at the most important position in sports — quarterback.
whom the Jets drafted in the second round two years ago — easily high enough to suggest Gang Green thought he had the bona fides to start under center in the NFL. Yet we haven’t seen him,Womens Brad Wing Jersey,If only they had a high-round draft pick on the sideline to audition for the role. Like Christian Hackenberg, don’t see him and perhaps won’t see him. And we haven’t been told why. It’s not like you need to be the top pick in the draft to flourish in pro football.
might lead the Eagles to the Super Bowl as the top seed in the NFC,Oakland stole Derek Carr in the second round. Russell Wilson was nabbed in the third round. Dallas bagged Dak Prescott in the fourth round. And so on. Nick Foles, a former third-rounder,Womens Jonathan Casillas Jersey, and he’s not even their starting quarterback. Likewise with Vikings QB Case Keenum, an undrafted NFL gypsy who was most famous for getting knocked out with the St. Louis Rams then being shamefully shoved back into the game.
a laughable headline that sprouted up from training camp last summer. Is that just a brain cramp from a neophyte? Or is it symbolic of a clueless QB?,Hackenberg may be the only QB in NFL history to be booted from a practice for improperly breaking a huddle
Folks within the franchise reportedly think that Hackenberg could get a shot in 2018, smarts and leadership — and then there’s the fact that the Jets, as they’re still tethered to his size,Authentic Aldrick Rosas Jersey, who lost McCown to a broken hand and are out of the playoff mix, don’t have a poor enough record to draft the top QBs on Mel Kiper’s board, not unless they mortgage the future to trade up.
which is pretty much where he is now. The worst he can do is throw the ball to the wrong team too many times,Authentic Olivier Vernon Jersey,Are the Jets’ brass prescient or clueless? Either way, what is the harm in handing Hackenberg the ball? The worse he can do is play himself off the roster, embarrass himself and look for another job. In other words,Authentic Damon Harrison Jersey, he could be Geno Smith.
Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that the Jets are interested in bringing Sheldon Richardson back to the team. Richardson was traded to the Seahawks before the start of this season and is set to become a free agent in March. Richardson has 37 tackles, a sack, an interception and a forced fumble while playing just over 59 percent of the defensive snaps in Seattle.
Richardson said in the months before the trade that he wanted to stick with the Jets to be part of better days after a rough 2016 season. The Jets had been trying to trade Richardson,Authentic Janoris Jenkins Jersey, who was a first-round pick in 2013 and was suspended twice while with the team, for quite a while at that point.
The deal they eventually made brought back a 2018 second-round pick and wide receiver Jermaine Kearse, who has turned in a strong season and is under contract for next season. Matching those assets with a Richardson return would be a pretty good job of moving pieces around by General Manager Mike Maccagnan,Authentic Brad Wing Jersey, but there’s a lot of time for other options to present themselves before the 2018 league year gets underway.
Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that the Jets aren’t planning to play Wilkerson.
Jets coach Todd Bowles said that the plan is for Bryce Petty to remain the team’s starter for their Week 17 game against the Patriots. Petty has started the last two games after Josh McCown’s season came to an end with a broken left hand against the Broncos in Week 14.,Authentic Jonathan Casillas Jersey,After Sunday’s 14-7 loss to the Chargers
but Bowles said he never considered going to Hackenberg.,Petty was 15-for-28 for 119 yards and an interception on a Hail Mary at the end of the first half on a day that saw him miss several open receivers. That kind of ineffectiveness has been a hallmark of Petty’s starts over the last two years
via Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News,Bowles said after the game, that Hackenberg’s “not that bad,” but the resistance to playing the 2016 second-round pick while Petty flounders sends a different message.
